The client needed to update an annual compliance course required to refresh field employees’ knowledge of a critical compliance program. The existing training was delivered via virtual learning to more than 3,000 employees through over 70 one‑hour sessions each year.

This approach was costly and inefficient. The sessions primarily captured attendance data, repeated familiar content, and were often used to share program announcements—resulting in more than 3,000 employee hours spent annually on refresher training with limited measurable impact.

Course analysis and SME interviews revealed an additional gap that impacted daily operations: employees and supervisors had incomplete knowledge of the compliance program examination process that certified field employees for daily tasks. This lack of knowledge was leading to inefficiencies in the testing process and lost work.

A new strategy was proposed to address both learning and operational gaps by replacing the virtual sessions with a self‑paced eLearning course under 30 minutes in length.

The redesigned training included two key innovations:

• Narrative, comic‑style design: The course followed an employee and supervisor through a story‑based scenario, modeling real interactions and compliance requirements from a learner‑centered perspective.

• Adaptive learning framework: Learners could test out of content they had already mastered, while the system collected meaningful performance data to provide insights and metrics to the line of business. The framework also enabled efficient maintenance and updates, reducing recurring development costs.

The solution reduced required training time from 60 minutes to 30 minutes, cutting training costs while increasing relevance, engagement, and accountability. The adaptive framework enables training time to be further reduced in subsequent years, after establishing a baseline during the initial rollout.

​Additionally, by improving understanding of the compliance certification process, the program increased efficiency in certification examinations, generating further operational cost savings and minimizing lost work time.
